The Park El Indio or Las Cometas is a public intervention, promoted by the Office of the Mayor of Bogotá, that takes advantage of an existing node of aqueduct infrastructure and transforms it into a place for recreation, sports, culture and interaction with nature, in one of the neighbourhoods that lacks the most public space in the city

The project is part of a potential linear system of multiscale parks within the main ecological structure. Beginning in the Rocío regional park of the San Rafael reservoir, going down the eastern hills, crossing the city and the project to the Bogotá river

In an area of 23.4 ha, the project also involves the existing infrastructure of a potable water tank of the aqueduct company, allowing the SUBA community to recover an area that was traditionally used for recreation and neighborhood integration.

The project was designed to achieve multiple interconnected goals: strengthening the connectivity of the city’s primary ecological network, addressing the recreational and sports demands of the Suba locality, fostering social integration among diverse groups, reimagining water infrastructure as an educational resource, and connecting residents with the history of pre-Hispanic societies

The city is built by and for everyone.

The project allowed the involvement of local communities via participatory methodologies like design workshops and walk through exercises in the initial phases, where local leaders expressed a great part of their dreams and attachments to the place. These workshops, and the introduction of this new public space and building in general, brought up a recurring situation in Latin America (and especially in the local community of Suba and its surroundings): potential conflicts arising due to the encounter of communities with unequal socio-economic conditions. The project aims to generate a link between these communities by offering public spaces and cultural, sports and recreational activities that can serve as a stage for new social interactions

Infrastructures that are friendlier to all lifeforms. (Harmonizing infrastructures.)

The project integrates public service infrastructure with the city’s underlying green network. By repurposing a large existing water tank and its associated piping, the project creates a park that strengthens Bogotá’s primary ecological structure. Existing vegetation is largely preserved, and native trees are planted to enhance biodiversity. The siting of structures prioritizes natural drainage patterns and connectivity among existing and proposed vegetation zones. This approach to reimagining urban infrastructure as spaces conducive to all lifeforms is a model replicated to any contemporary city.

Architecture within the Landscape.

The architecture is conceived as an extension of the natural topography, maximizing the use of limited urban space and accentuating the panoramic views offered by the site’s elevated position. This design strategy minimizes the visual impact of the built structures, enhances the connection to the immediate park environment, and frames distant views of the Andean Plateau and Bogotá Savannah. Furthermore, it creates diverse areas for sports and outdoor recreation. The project establishes a fluid, harmonious relationship between the architecture and the surrounding landscape.”
