2026 Private Gardens / Spain / Built in 2022 /
The whole Spain northern region is what spaniards call ‘the green Spain’, in other words, ‘the non mediterranean Spain, an area by the Cantabrian Sea, cloudy, rainy and, specially in the case of the Principality of Asturias, with high mountains.
In a rural settlement, a couple decides to rebuild their old family house in a contemporary architectural style new one. They have to restore the old traditional Asturian barn, ‘hórreo’, (1778), made entirely of wood, except for the stone pillars that support it. Some of the planks from the granary, those that supported the roof tiles, will be used in the paving of the vehicle entrance.
Even though they had requested a naturalistic garden design, the couple prefers a contemporary layout and character, which this landscaper presents for their lower garden, the one that overlooks the adjacent valley. The upper garden also acquires that style thanks to the interplay of paving and planting beds, decorated with mulch that contrasts with them.
In the misty valleys of central Asturias, a garden of contrasts, with bold and vibrant tones that underline the four seasons, stands out amidst the greenery and the rain. The focal point of the lower garden is a simple fountain whose centerpiece is an old granary pillar, drilled through its center. To create the gentle, Japanese-inspired murmur of the water, the stone was raised a few centimeters above the water’s surface.
As a special request from the owners, we designed an outdoor bathroom in a deep recess in the center of the new house.
