Tengbom was commissioned by HSB to design the courtyard of Kv. D1, located at the Inner Harbour of Norrköping. Positioned 4 meters above ground level, the courtyard lies nestled in between a high-rise residential building to the north and a two-story terraced house to the south. To the east, it adjoins another residential block, while the western edge opens toward the adjacent park and harbour, providing expansive views.
Design Concept
The primary design objective was to create a spatial element that would both mediate the scale difference between the terrace houses and the high-rise building, as well as serve as a communal gathering space for residents. This dual purpose led to the concept of a 37-meter-long pergola extending the full length of the courtyard.
The pergola is composed of uniformly proportioned posts and trusses along its entire span. As the width of the pergola narrows, the ridge height increases, resulting in a dynamic spatial experience. This gradual transformation emphasizes the structure’s architectural rhythm and creates a sense of movement as one walks through it.
At its broadest point, the pergola transitions into a greenhouse, which has quickly become a favoured spot among residents. In addition, a long outdoor table beneath the pergola supports social interaction and community activities.
Besides the pergola, the courtyard features lush greenery, meandering paths paved in brick, and playful landscape elements such as tree stumps and two small dens designed for imaginative play. Ground-floor apartments are provided with private patios, enhancing the connection between private and shared outdoor spaces.
