TRACING THE ORIGIN OF THE ORIENTAL CHARM, LOOKING FOR THE DREAM OF LANDSCAPE POETRY

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project is located in Fuzhou, a national historical and cultural city. The designer combines the traditional culture of Fuzhou and the residential needs, taking the Lingering Garden, one of the four famous gardens in China as a blueprint, using modern methods to interpret the traditional oriental context, in order to meet the artistic conception of landscapes. Under the construction, the sponge city ecosystem is applied to multiple independent residential areas to create advanced community landscape. The ecological process is visualized through landscape design methods, combined with activity space, becoming an urban green space for going to nature and observing the process of rainwater purification which is open to residents and visitors, providing the possibility for the integrated practice of humanistic ecological landscape community.

DESIGN CONCEPT

We deeply studied Fuzhou’s traditional culture, urban characteristics and human settlement needs, and finally gave up the way of large communities or large gardens, and utilized the method of Lingering Garden, one of China’s four famous gardens, as a blueprint, and used modern artistic techniques to interpret the traditional oriental culture and illustrate the spiritual pursuit of “enjoying mountains and forests without leaving the city”.

GREENNESS

In order to create the artistic conception of mountains and rivers, multiple independent living areas are integrated to build a humanized and pleasant space that is friendly to walking with appropriate scale. According to the low-impact development concept of “infiltration, stagnation, storage, purification and utilization”, the ecological rainwater system is applied and built where the concept of sponge city is integrated into the entire garden to realize the sustainable cycle of rainwater.

RAINWATER COLLECTION CYCLE ANALYSIS

The terrain changes in the site provide conditions for the construction of a rainwater reuse system. The landscape organizes ground surface runoff by sorting out the vertical relationship of the whole area, and introduces sponge city facilities such as seasonal streams (38 meters) / centralized rain gardens (1500 square meters). The facility realizes the cycle system of rainwater in the site as “collection-storage-purification-reuse”, and the total rainwater runoff control rate reaches 70%. At the same time, through the landscape design method, the ecological process is visualized, combined with the activity space open to the residents, which has become an urban green space that is close to nature and observes the process of rainwater purification.

RAINWATER COLLECTION ANALYSIS

Ingenious and creative ecological pursuit – ecologically livable community landscape: In the early stage, the ratio of soft landscape to hard landscape was controlled at 4:6 to ensure the realization of the total project cost. In order to create a plant landscape with a great sense of atmosphere and quality, plants were integrated into the community landscape in a more creative and ecological way under the vision of being naturally interesting and approachable, and the green space between the houses in the residential area is fully utilized to form an ecological space.

CREATE WITH INGENUITY

JOINT EFFORTS MAKE NEW BREAKTHROUGHS TO MAKE WAY FOR THE CREATION OF COMMUNITY ECOLOGY

Fuzhou is a riverside and seaside ecological garden city, as well as a national historical and cultural city. Relying on natural resources and diversified cultural exchange activities, the relationship between local people and nature has also reached a balance of coexistence, forming the present urban landscape and lifestyle with regional characteristic.

The poetic oriental sentiment is expressed in the space, presenting a return to a wonderful dwelling, just like a “pause” in a great opera, a reminder that one can slow down in life.

NATURE FRIENDLY

At the beginning of the landscape design, the designer expected that even if the base is located on the most prosperous street in Fuzhou city, it could still provide residents with a “nature-friendly” living environment, and the concept of “bring nature home” was proposed. Therefore, the design focuses on the core needs of the residents, integrating and refining the oriental painting landscape and ecological landscape, and presents it in a form that is more suitable for modern living.

In the later stage of the design, a rational and restrained design was maintained, so that the elements complement and also achieve each other to jointly create a new community landscape, which provides the possibility for the integrated practice of humanistic ecological landscape community.

VARYING SCENERIES IN THE LAYERED COURTYARDS

The design uses the classical gardening techniques of Chinese gardens such as opposite scenery and frame scenery in the space, showing the cultural characteristics of “gardens in the garden, scenery in the scenery, different scenery at every step”. The design explores traditional Chinese colors, shapes, layout and materials, and applies each element in the garden through the derivation and superposition of oriental aesthetics.

When making a transition and walking in the garden, one will appreciate the green trees and flourishing flowers.

The landscape water steps open like a mirror, clear and clean, while the sky light, cloud shadows, and tree shadows shine and float on the water surface. The dense and cool water vapor makes people feel more comfortable.

POSTSCRIPT

The design and practice of the humanistic ecological community continues our thinking on the locality and lifestyle of the project as always. Simultaneously, we began to pay attention to the impact and contribution of residential areas to the urban environment. At present, the humanistic ecological community has been put into use, and we will continue to pay attention to the residents’ experience of using community space and the ecological performance of the community’s natural environment.
