In densely built and largely sealed urban environments, summer heat has become increasingly
unbearable. This phenomenon is also evident in the centre of Schaan. In response, the present
open space development strategy identifies and activates the latent potential of the town
centre through a coherent and climate-responsive design approach.

At the heart of the concept lies a network of interconnected public spaces that redefines the
role of greenery within the urban fabric. Along the 1,200-metre circular route, a sequence
of public spaces unfold like a string of pearls . These plazas, each with its own identity and
character, form the “pearls,” while a lushly planted network of streetscapes, with façade and
roof greening acts as the connective “thread,” linking them into a unified spatial experience.
This green framework enhances walkability, strengthens orientation and establishes a legible
and attractive urban structure. Aditionally playing a crucial role in climate regulation, reducing
heat accumulation and enhancing air quality.

Water management is integrated as a visible and functional design element. Through
infiltration areas, retention zones, and permeable surfaces, rainwater is managed on site and
reused within the landscape, following sponge city principles. These measures contribute to
both ecological resilience and the experiential quality of the public realm.

At Lindaplatz, modular green shading structures provide flexible and comfortable spaces for
rest and social interaction, combining vegetation, seating, and low-maintenance technical
solutions.

At Rathausplatz, the lower square invites visitors with permeable gravel surfaces, generous
seating, and a drinking fountain, while the upper square is defined by a pergola structure.
Climbing plants create a shaded, atmospheric space and establish a strong spatial identity.
Together, these interventions form a cohesive urban landscape that meets contemporary
design, ecological, and social requirements. Guided by the vision of “Schaa Grüa Blau” | “Green-
Blue Schaan“ the project redefines Schaan as a connected, livable, and climate-adaptive town
centre, where green spaces and public life are seamlessly interwoven into a resilient urban
fabric.
