EXPERIENCE

For more than 25 years, the In Situ workshop has been designing and implementing a wide variety of projects, on all territory scales, and numerous spaces and public landscapes, in France and in Europe. The agency was founded in Lyon by Emmanuel Jalbert and Annie Tardivon, both graduates of the ENSP in Versailles. The path of the two partners separates in 2011. Today the workshop gathers about fifteen collaborators, landscape and town planners around Emmanuel Jalbert.

In Situ has made itself known through a wide variety of contextual projects, several riverbank developments that most often integrate a strong public dimension.

The team is developing project management missions, but also urban studies on eco-neighbourhood projects and sustainable urban renewal operations. The studio was also involved in various participatory approaches, integrating active consultation with users, residents and managers. The agency has acquired a savoir-faire in creating shared gardens, in urban agriculture and alternative stormwater management. We strive to integrate from the design stage, upkeep and maintenance of landscaped areas. In Situ regularly collaborates with numerous partners with complementary skills, within the framework of innovative urban projects, voluntarily very diverse and open.

All these landscapes of uses are comprehended as fertile and evolving environments, places of life that strongly associate space, time, life… and people.

The route of the workshop shows a long-term commitment to create spaces open to all, landscapes designed to be practiced and invested by a large number of users. Through each project, the public space is considered as a common good to be shared, a territory of conviviality, contiguity and citizenship.

ATTITUDE AND APPROACH

Over the years, the projects and the construction works, the In Situ workshop has developed a specific attitude and approach, based on a few essential convictions :
– Broadening the view: designing a project requires going beyond the boundaries of a plot, to be able to understand the horizon and geography of a site, because the landscape is above all the art of linking : connecting, reactivating, recycling are the key words of our interventions…
– Leaning on what already exists: each project site carries within it the seeds of its mutation, it is up to us to know how to read it, and to reveal it to consolidate and amplify its qualities and accompany a transformation. Landscaping and urban planning is also about knowing how to spare all that has the merit of existing and is already there.
– To give meaning and use: landscapes are not scenery but places of life. Everywhere, we propose to diversify the uses, to install relations of neighborhood and amenity, by developing, in the heart of cities, spaces of freedom and well-being, open places, not programmed, where it is possible to wander dreaming… without necessarily having something precise to do.
– Focus on life: we are developing essential work on soils and water management, which determine fertility, good plant growth and environmental biodiversity.
– Doing better with less  : on all occasions we seek to design simple, resistant spaces to be more easily appropriable, with great sobriety in their implementation to allow them to be more sustainable.
– Taking time into account: with space, time is the other essential component of our cities’ landscapes.

Taking this dimension into account is the basis of our work which plays and composes with days and nights, the cycle of seasons, daily life and event, the phasing of a construction site and the necessary evolution of landscapes in motion.

RHÔNE RIVERBANKS

Lyon; France

This design was en exciting large-scale experience : five kilometers of riverbank, 10 hectares in the city enter of Lyon open towards the river Rhône and the horizon. After the competition, a public dialogue brought adjustments to a project which needed to be owned by the people of Lyon. The flooding risks of the riverbanks asked for spaces that were not excessively specialized and for a design of continuous unpartitioned public areas. We have worked on fluidity, on gliding from one segment to the other in order to create a linear, fertile, flexible and generous space. It is now a groove of nature, a port where numerous barges have docked, and a widely used park which is singularly alive.

BANKS OF THE SAONE

Rochetaillée, France

Rochetaillée is a small commune located north of Lyon on the left bank of the Saone. This project is part of the “Rive de Saone project » initiated by the Lyon urban community.
This design is extremely simple. We worked on reinforcing the damaged banks and creating a large meadow, a green beach open towards the river Saône. This very generous space, which is unique along the river, can accommodate events, concerts and screenings. Air, grass, the horizon, wind, trees and selected equipments, picnic tables and large lounging benches, offer a peaceful space for relaxing. We have collaborated on the design with four artists: Le Gentil Garçon, Didier Fiuza Faustino, Lang & Baumann and Tadashi Kawamata who created works of art that blend into the landscape. The guinguettes (traditional popular dance halls), punctuate this long walk along the water where pedestrians and cycles find their place.

Delivery: 2014 / Competition: 2011 / Area: 6 Ha / Budget: 6 M€ / Lead landscapr architect: IN SITU Paysages & urbanisme / Team: Sinbio (vegetation engineers) + ICC (Bet VRD) + LEA (lighting designers) + OGI (infrastructure, structure engineers)

BANKS OF THE SEINE

Rouen, France

Over the years, the low quays of Rouen have been abandoned in favor of a large car park and Saint-Romain’s fair, one month a year.

The reflection carried out on the left bank has developed a large port park system which proposes various uses. Facing Sainte-Catherine痴 hill and the cathedral, the quayside promenade stretches for one kilometre ; planted with multi-trunks plane trees and punctuated by several bridges forming three sequences. Upstream, the Saint-Sever meadow opens out onto the Seine, the quay, reprofiled in seating tiers, allows for approaching water. This riparian meadow, equipped with some loungers, is punctuated with willow copses. Downstream, Claquedent backstage offers playgrounds between strips of grasses and perennial plants : slides, shovels, labyrinth of wooden stakes. The long Bargemen sequence combines stretches of grass, poplar groves and a mineral esplanade. Urban games : volleyball, basketball and football fields are disseminated between apple orchards, planted in corten trays, like stored containers. The large pier gives access to the quayside and offers views on the opposite bank. Furniture and signage are sober and raw, in response to the industrial identity of the port.

LAZARE-GOUJON SQUARE

Villeubanne, France

In Villeurbanne, in the suburbs of Lyon, this part of town created in 1930 is an architectural and urban manifesto which has been classified as a “historic monument”.
Working on this design was humbling as a context of exceptional architectural heritage – the famous neighborhood of the Gratte-ciels (skycrapers) – gave us little leeway. After a public dialogue, the dimensions of the project as well as certain elements of the design were changed in order to keep the spirit of the 1930s urban project while introducing a new dimension. The two basins and the trellis were reinterpreted and found their rightful place between the Thêatre National Populaire (national theater) and the City Hall. Collaborating with the artist Philippe Favier has infused poetry into the design through a “celestial garden” planted at the bottom of the mirror basins.

Delivery: 2008 / Competition: 2004 / Budget: 3,1 M€ / Area: 10 000 m² / Lead landscape architect: IN SITU Paysages & urbanisme E.Jalbert & A.Tardivon / Team: E2CA (Bet VRD – economist) + Coup d’Eclat (lighting designer) + JM Llorca (fountain designer) + Ph. Favier (artist) / Photo: IN SITU

ROSA LUXEMBURG GARDENS

Paris, France

The Pajol district is located at the foot of Montmartre, north of Paris, along the tracks of the Gare de l’Est. The Rosa Luxemburg gardens stretch from north to south between the Halle Pajol (now a youth hostel) and the railroad tracks. This continuous garden is covered under the Halle, and in open air to the north of the site. A long footbridge at the edge of the Halle forms a belvedere over the gardens and echoes the Morocco courtyard on the opposite bank. The open garden develops north of the Halle. Its tiered terraces with evergreen stands of Scots pine accommodate playgrounds and a vegetable garden forming a lively public space. To the south is the covered garden, shaded and white, which slips under the Halle and illuminates the space. Multiple basins are located between the old tracks, collecting and storing rainwater. Some of these basins are planted with aquatic vegetation while others reflect like mirrors. Masses of shrubs, trunks and stem tree alignments are implanted in a linear fashion, evoking vegetable wagons. Water circulation is essential throughout the garden: part of the roof water is collected and stored in the different basins, then distributed by gravity irrigation on all planted surfaces to ensure watering requirements.
