This private home on the Kemmelberg in the beautiful landscape of the West Flemish hills in Belgium was given a subtle yet spirited architectural boost. Studio Basta applied the same treatment to the surroundings. The existing garden was removed as much as possible and replaced by native vegetation adapted to the ferruginous sandstone of the Kemmelberg. A subtle layer of quarry stone structures the entrance. This creates a poetic, ordered and easy-going green environment. By respecting and enhancing the different time layers, the site becomes a fascinating palimpsest with echoes from a recent and more distant past. The site embodies the location’s rich spirit and silently integrates into its context.
