Fusion Prairie Retreat by Wentworth Landscapes + Construction

Originating from the Canadian Prairies, our clients sought an outdoor space that would pay a special homage to their Saskatchewan roots while also providing functional spaces for enjoying and entertaining. Understanding the clients’ desires while remaining committed to our environmental stewardship, the design journey unfolded. The vision for their country home involved a fusion of naturalised prairie-style landscaping, integrated with a newly renovated 19th-century red-brick farmhouse. The home’s new addition introduced a modern edge within the rural setting, incorporating steel architectural elements. This allowed the landscape design to play within the space between contemporary and flowing themes of nature. The result is a striking juxtaposition that combines the whimsical charm of the prairies with sleek architectural elements.

The design style is grounded in the long, linear rectangle pool, which features a weathered limestone coping that is surrounded by the natural Ipe wood pool terrace. The modern cabana we designed and built is a direct complement to the house addition, incorporating identical contemporary steel finishes. The walkways also maintain the naturalised feel, finished in exposed aggregate, mirroring the stone texture of the adjacent pebble beach.

The landscape features multiple terraces with their own distinct theme, they are also strategically positioned to maximise the scenic lake views. Among these, includes a custom art orbs hammock situated in a sandy beach area, a screened-in cabana complete with a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and seating area, a welcoming firepit seating space, a revitalising sauna, and an Art Studio with inspiring views of the lake. On windy days, alternative retreat options are available for our clients, located at the front of the house and amongst the prairie gardens is a serene dining & seating area for them to enjoy and entertain.

When approaching the home and gardens, there is a custom gate which then leads to a winding paved driveway flanked by trees that directs you to the parking area.
As night falls the true enchantment unfolds. The outdoor lighting was strategically placed by our team to create depth and unveiling details within the gardens such as art installations. Walkways and seating areas are bathed in soft light, accentuating their surroundings for nighttime use and enhancing safety.

This rural property served as both a canvas for aesthetic landscaping and an opportunity for environmentally beneficial design. We carefully selected native perennials and trees for their drought tolerance and their ability to support biodiversity. The selection of drought-tolerant plants helps water conservation but also establishes habitats and sources of sustenance for birds and pollinators. Not only did this enhance the landscape’s visual appeal but it also contributed to its ecological sustainability, providing a harmonious balance between beauty and environmental stewardship.
