Searching for vitality in the green

I.Site overview
Nansha Wetland Park is located in Wanqingsha Town, Nansha District, the southernmost part of Guangzhou, with a total area of 10,000 acres. It is an important station and feeding ground for migratory birds on the pan-Pacific migration route of East Asia. It is famous for its many kinds of wild birds and is called the “paradise of migratory birds” in the Pearl River Delta. Nansha wetland has a good ecological environment, and plays an important role in preventing wind and waves, conserving water and soil, and regulating climate for the surrounding areas, so it is also known as the “kidney of Guangzhou”.

We take the hidden bird watching as the starting point, from the material and form to minimize the disturbance of migratory birds, using bamboo as an ecological material to create three different forms of bird watching structures. The combination of traditional bamboo and modern construction technology, the re-interpretation of the slope roof of the ancient building, reflects the traditional Chinese art culture in inheritance and innovation; While protecting the ecology, it combines the functions of science popularization and cultural tourism to provide tourists with a cool and hidden bird-watching spot.

II. Build presentation

01 Bird Watching Pavilion

The Bird Watching Pavilion is the most hidden of the three bamboo structures, showing a long and curved form, combining the winding shoreline of the wetland park with the sense of fluctuation of the lake, and the fluctuation of the roof changes, its shape becomes more suitable for the lake shore.

The structure is made up of several similar bamboo frames, forming a semi-outdoor gray space that can both shade the sun and rain and provide ventilation and heat dissipation, providing visitors with a strolling bird-watching place.

At the same time, considering the high vigilance of wild birds, the eaves are lowered to a certain extent, and the viewing place of the bird pavilion is set in three slightly enlarged areas, hiding the posture of the bird watchers, which can effectively avoid the birds being frightened. Sitting on the bench, the sight naturally passes through the winding gap to find the birds in the green.

02 Wetland Eye

Wetland Eye is located in the park near the water side of the main road, along the long water side path, the wetland Eye space extends above the water, visitors can stay here, is a set of rest, bird watching, punch a card as one of the functions of the pavilion.
The structure of the Wetland Eye is formed by a number of circles moving in space, supported by four parabolic structures, eaves and fences provide a rich spatial experience of opening and closing.

All its functional attributes are concentrated on the middle platform. The open form of the front and back and the existence of the middle patio and glass platform make the wetland eye can realize the interflow of the surrounding landscape, and the vision is wider and the light is more abundant. Meanwhile, against the background of the bamboo structure, it can give visitors a better feeling of being close to nature.

03 Bird Watching Tower

Looking at the whole wetland park, it presents a flat natural landscape, so a bird watching tower is placed in the center of the wetland to make up for the lack of high viewing facilities in the park. Different from the first two kinds of emphasis on “hidden in the environment”, the bird watching tower emphasizes the feeling of jumping out of the “only in the mountain”, so that visitors can break through the height barrier. Overlooking the scenic landscape and flocks of birds.

The bird watching tower is a scientific observation and recording facility of birds and plants in South China National Botanical Garden. The mangrove carbon flux monitoring tower functions as a combination of wetland science popularization and ecological research.

The whole structure is a double helix alternately rising form, with the help of the central steel bundle structure, the two spirals are gradually expanded outward around the central point. The inner spiral provides climbing steps, and the outer spiral is covered with palm skin, making the tower more integrated into the environment and covering the entire climbing process, so that all the viewing vision is concentrated on the top platform, creating a sense of space experience.
