Having previously collaborated all three, owner, architect and landscape architect, the landscape of this new single family residence was the outcome of their latest joint effort. The landscape enthusiast owners and the landscape architect with the backdrop of outstanding architecture combined with long hours of meticulous ideas interchange amongst them created an abstract idea, a basic plan. The plan was developed further by adjusting the concept, revising the details, selecting hardscape materials and handpicking all the native and Florida friendly trees, shrubs and ground covers. Thought was given to the selection of the driveway materials. The design intent was to use materials that were environmentally friendly. Concrete paving was one of two materials selected, it is a resilient material and helps reduce heat island effects among several benefits. The second material used in combination with concrete was Oolite, a natural South Florida stone. Oolitic limestone, was formed as shallow seas covered the area between periods of glaciation. The stone is extracted from underground shallow quarries that are thousands of years old, it is a sustainable material from its quarrying stage through its installation and long life.
The house revolves around a spectacular central courtyard designed in a minimalist approach with a center planter where a large Bridal Veil Tree sits with orchids hanging on its trunks. The surrounding interior areas of the courtyard with floor to ceiling glass provide garden views during the day as well as enjoy the lit garden in the evening. The courtyard also fills all the rooms in the house with natural light. The surrounding landscape areas of the property were landscaped in a tropical garden fashion. There are private outdoor terraces in both ground and second floor which provide for serene enjoyment with views of the surrounding gardens and the dense perimeter landscape which provides privacy for the family.
An elaborate and well thought out planting palette, comprising mostly of natives including green buttonwood trees, firebush, cocoplum and many other species, provide a display of plant material as you walk along meandering walks and enjoy secluded niches. The landscape architect’s and owner’s sensitivity in design allowed to integrate for a combination of some of the plants to serve as hosts for birds and butterflies.
From main entry to enjoying all interior areas of the residence, courtyard, outdoor terraces and pool area, landscape architecture is present in all views of this residence. Your eyes capture green from everywhere you stand, even on the second floor. The result of all the effort is obvious in the enjoyment of the family within this beautifully executed landscape.
