Casa Pupunha is a residential landscape project located at the highest point of a private condominium in Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon, bordering a permanent preservation area. The landscape design was developed by Hana Eto Gall in close dialogue with the architecture of Laurent Troost Architectures and the interiors of Chris Coimbra.
The adjacency to native preserved forest was not treated as a backdrop but as a design driver. The project extends the ecological logic of the surrounding forest into the built environment, reinforcing continuity between the garden and the preservation area through species selection, spatial organization, and the treatment of existing vegetation.
Arrival is structured as a gradual immersion. A path lined with dense tropical vegetation, layered textures, and natural shade introduces visitors to a humid microclimate before they enter the house. Green volumes filter light along the way, ensure privacy, and create a sequence of discovery that prepares the transition between outside and inside. The vegetation continues into the interior, accompanying internal circulation and maintaining visual and sensory connection throughout.
The planting palette draws on native and climate-adapted species, including Calatheas, Alocasias, Heliconias, banana trees, and palms. Existing vegetation was retained wherever the design allowed, and new species were selected for both ecological and aesthetic contribution, supporting biodiversity, thermal comfort, and privacy across the site. An automated irrigation system was integrated to maintain the garden with minimal intervention.
A reflecting pool connects interior and exterior spaces, reinforcing the continuity between architecture and landscape.
