The Lamplighter School, in collaboration with landscape architects MVVA, set out to create a distinctive, educational playground for its 470 students – one that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and a sense of wonder. To realise this vision, MONSTRUM was commissioned to design an imaginative playscape that seamlessly integrates immersive learning opportunities with physical challenge.

The result is an expansive, story-driven playground composed of interconnected zones, unified by the theme of “the wonderful garden.” Key features include the Wondering Earthworm and playhouses, a double dandelion zip slide, cloud swings, and the Majestic Mother Tree – a large-scale play structure that doubles as an outdoor classroom, complete with an accessible ramp.

The playground redefines the traditional schoolyard by combining narrative design with diverse play experiences. Each structure invites exploration through multiple routes and challenges, engaging both body and mind across ages and abilities. From high-energy movement on the zip line to quiet retreat in the tree canopy, the design supports a full spectrum of play behaviours, including reflection and sensory engagement.

Constructed primarily from wood, the playground also promotes wellbeing, with natural materials known to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and support cognitive and physical development.

Widely embraced by students, staff, and parents, the playground has become an integral part of the school environment, enhancing everyday learning through play.
