Carved into the steep hills bordering Silicon Valley, a striking new residence, Valley Ridge, exemplifies integrated design, meticulous engineering, and thoughtful site programming ingeniously transforming existing design constraints into new compelling opportunities.

The panoramic views were the primary design focus at Valley Ridge. To fully capitalize on this unique feature, the landscape architects and the architectural team collaborated closely, developing a site plan that seamlessly integrates the house with its environment. Each exterior level offers distinct, purposely-driven spaces that blur the lines between the indoor and outdoor environment.

Valley Ridge’s hillside location naturally presented a spectrum of technical and logistical complexities that pushed the boundaries of engineering and design. The site’s unique parameters, notably the presence of expansive soils, demanded innovative solutions. For instance, the seemingly simple addition of a pool required the installation of 29 robust structural piers to ensure its stability. Similarly, an additional 20 piers were strategically employed to support the main structural slab of the back patio. Given the inherent risk of land subsidence in hillside construction, the structural pool shell, main patio, and the house foundation where interconnected to prevent any differential movement. The difficult topography and steep slopes introduced their own significant set of hurdles. To address these challenges, large, terraced retaining walls were thoughtfully integrated throughout the site. Furthermore, the steep existing grade necessitated a thorough and highly considered approach to drainage and stormwater management.

The arrival experience is conceived as a memorable journey, with the main entry thoughtfully positioned above a tranquil water feature cradled within a serene grove of multi-trunk Betula nigra. The client’s early vision for a dramatic entry water feature culminates in an enlarged, fully tiled black basin where staggered limestone pads appear to float serenely above the water’s surface. The captivating water effect is achieved by a stone wall bisected by a stainless-steel channel through which recirculated water flows. The staggered pattern of the limestone paving in this area subtly introduces the shifting geometries that define the project’s overall design language. The planting along the entry sequence, with the exception of the River Birches, has been intentionally kept minimal as the overall design aims to gradually build anticipation as visitors approach the front door.

The backyard unfolds into a series of thoughtfully designed outdoor living spaces. Notably, every architectural and landscape element is meticulously aligned with the exterior corners and edges of the house. The main patio, paved with thickened limestone slabs elevated on structural pedestals, achieves a flawlessly level surface while cleverly concealing a sophisticated network of subsurface drainage, waterproofing, and utilities below.

Beyond the expansive limestone terracing lies a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, boasting a complete array of professional-grade appliances ready to cater to large events or intimate family dinners. An exterior television that rises silently from behind the BBQ counter via an automated lift and hidden exterior speakers create a unique outdoor living experience. Centered along the length of the pool is a shimmering iridescent glass-tiled spa with a continuous vanishing edge on all sides. Adding a dramatic touch to the pool is a transparent acrylic panel at the exterior staircase, offering a playful visual connection between the main

patio and the lower levels. On the opposite side, a rare feature for a private pool, an artificial current system, allows for continuous, uninterrupted lap swimming.

The lower level of Valley Ridge gracefully unfolds into recreational domains, featuring a generous expanse of lawn perfect for active play and hosting large gatherings. Adjacent to the lower-level gym is a custom cold plunge and dedicated patio space perfect for outdoor yoga.

The planting design manifests as contrasting colors and textures in alternating, geometric drifts. Massed swaths of soft grasses intermingle with the minty hues of Pittosporum, the deep tones of Rosmarinus officinalis L. and loropetalum, and the varied greens of Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. griseus ‘Yankee Point’ culminating in a ground plane that is both luxuriant and ecologically responsible.

Recognizing the home’s visibility from the adjacent roadway despite its setback, the design thoughtfully incorporates mature evergreen trees, carefully selected and placed to effectively screen the residence from the outside world while preserving the coveted views from within.
