The garden of ZM house embraces the newly built house while using the original topography and a big part of the existing trees and vegetation. The first time we saw the existing plot we faced a dilapidated house overcome by vegetation and a sharp topography sloping from the end of the plot towards the street, which we decided to partially keep and tame, as well as keep as many trees as possible. Therefore, even though a new house has been built, we managed to maintain some of the original atmosphere while making the garden more open and allowing the owners access to all parts of the garden.
The beautiful semitransparent house allows us to create the feeling that the plot is a whole garden with a house placed inside – and not just a house with some green surroundings. From the street entrance one can see the back garden through the white louvers and the windows. The entrance patio also gives the illusion that the garden exists inside the house and really a part of it.
We used the original topography at the end of the plot to create a high walking path supported by Corten steel retaining walls, while preserving and protecting some big, existing trees. A Corten steel balcony was added to create a wonderful view point elevated from the house level, thus allowing an interesting view towards the house and garden.
This house is a part of the garden as much as the garden is part of the house. The two live symbiotically together and that is the beauty of this project.
