The Cobbs Creek Playground demonstrates how community voices and environmental stewardship can come together to create something extraordinary. The Cobbs Creek Nature Playground is a vibrant and inclusive nature-based play environment located in West Philadelphia. Located in a historically underinvested site at the edge of Philadelphia’s municipal boundary, this transformative project creates a keystone of vibrancy through its celebration of the area’s unique urban-woodland character and inclusive play environment.
This project results from a collaboration with the Rebuild program and the local West Philadelphia community. The mission of this collaboration is rooted in Rebuild’s efforts promote economic inclusion and build stronger communities by making physical improvements to public spaces like parks, recreation centers, and libraries in neighborhoods across Philadelphia. Their work is made possible by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax, and they have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in improving community facilities.
The Cobbs Creek neighborhood has suffered from historic disinvestment and a lack of quality public spaces. The existing playground facilities, which even initially provided very limited play value, had since suffered from damage and neglect. Early in the process, the design team encountered graffiti on existing play equipment that read, “Safe play spaces matter.” This sentiment became the project’s guiding principle, ensuring safety, inclusivity, and joy.
The playground overcame challenges stemming from historical disinvestment and highlight the site’s assets: the site overlooks the creek system and boasts large trees. These trees hold significant cultural importance and ecological value to the community, especially as they faced recent urban canopy loss. The tree canopy, combined with the playground’s proximity to the Cobbs Creek neighborhood and the Community Environmental Center, imbue the site with a unique sense of urban nature.
The playground’s design draws inspiration from the site’s woodland qualities to offer a nature-based, inclusive play experience. The layout is conceptualized as a clearing nestled among the trees, with a looped path that interlocks diverse zones of space and offers a full circuit for play and exploration. Within this loop, distinct zones cater to children of all ages, while ample seating ensures caregivers are comfortably accommodated.
The Design Team, comprised of architects, landscape architects, and civil and structural engineers, were engaged by Rebuild in Philadelphia to manage concept design through construction documents for the Nature Playground at Cobbs Creek. Throughout the process, the Design Team collaborated with Rebuild’s Community Engagement Consultant, facilitating focus groups, surveys, workshops, and outreach to incorporate the voices of the West Philadelphia community. With the guidance of over 300 local students and residents, robust community engagement efforts helped shape key design decisions like swings, misters, and play areas, ensuring the park met community needs. The final design prioritizes intergenerational play, engages with nature through natural materials and features, improves circulation and connectivity, creates a designated area for caregivers, and celebrates inclusivity by providing recreational space for a diverse group of users.
At a ribbon cutting ceremony that drew hundreds of visitors, community members, local leaders and politicians, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney remarked “Every neighborhood, no matter their zip code, deserves high quality accessible parks. And finally, this neighborhood is getting the attention it needs.” The joyful celebration saw children and adults of all ages climbing, running, jumping, balancing, and building community.
When asked what this meant for her neighborhood, community member and Cobbs Creek Ambassador Temwa Wright said “I think the community feels valued…And listened to. I think the community feels it’s about time. It’s a great gift to the community of Cobbs Creek.”
