Since 2008, Agence Ter has been working on Belval Park, a project located on the site of a former steelworks in Belval, Luxembourg. The park is the central green space in the redevelopment area and acts as a link between the surrounding new residential, working and commercial areas. The park is located on an artificial plateau that was formed through industrial utilisation and offers various views on the surrounding landscape.
Linear garden with urban promenade
As part of Belval Park, the Canal Garden is located between the park and the new residential area of Belval Sud and the Kanner Campus school centre. They are connected to the Canal Garden by paths and a range of different playgrounds. Like a threshold, the linear Canal Garden marks the entrance to the park from the north. It is accompanied by a wide and generous promenade for pedestrians and users of soft mobility.
Visualising the ancient water system
The Jardin Canal follows the course of the canalised Wënschelbach stream, which lies eight metres below. Originally a natural stream, the Wënschelbach crossed the entire site before being diverted and channeled several times due to industrial use. The Canal Garden project brings it back to the plateau.
The Canal Garden is lower than the surrounding area and includes playgrounds and recreational areas. It is lined with seating along the promenade. From here there are views across the park to the chimneys and furnaces of the Square Mile district. Footbridges and various steps provide a variety of crossing options. In general, all areas are accessible to people with disabilities.
The design of the Jardin Canal plays with colours and shapes as a reference to water and its enormous impact on the landscape. It is planted with grasses and insect-friendly flowering herbs such as lavender, sage and mint. The result is a high quality, natural recreational area with interesting floral aspects while promoting biodiversity. It is a place to be all year round.
Belvedere to the landscape
The urban promenade runs parallel to the Canal Garden and leads to a viewing balcony on the edge of the slope. It overlooks the Wënschelbach, which comes to the surface here, and the neighbourhood opposite. Paths lead from the belvedere down to the main promenade, along the Wassertrapp, a stream that serves as the main collector for rainwater, the Belval Nord residential area, along the edge of the slope or through the park.
