Located in Sarthe, a department of north-west France, Roézé-sur-Sarthe is an exemplary village in a region well-known for its quality of life and mild weather.
In 2014, the municipality of Roézé-sur-Sarthe initiated an urban renewal project centred around the village core. The project, encompassing an area of 5200 m2, consisted of several projects: study and analysis of the urban environment, the setting up of a public consultation, and the site’s design – which included the design of accessible and modern public spaces which maintain the heritage aspect of the village.
The main issues that had to be dealt with in our design were the implementation of a wide shared levelled space with flush kerbs. This gives a light and rather minimalistic atmosphere to the project, simply outlined by a collection of ornamental Prunus, of a less known double-flowering variety, that sprang elegantly from the stone paving.
The work aims to create a distinctive public space including shops, community facilities, and parking spaces.
Detailed topographical work, to perfectly adjust all levels, allowed us to enhance the legibility and accessibility of the space to provide easy access to the town hall and nearby shops.
Close attention to the detailing of the paved surfaces led us to choose quality natural stone that is able to sustain the heavy lorries and tractors that drive through the village centre.
We also focused on colours and materials to design an original, understated yet contemporary decorative layout. Colour harmony, permeable paving, and an original design were also thought out, as well as street furniture.
As per the usual Champ-Libre trademark, all ironwork (railings, ramps) was specially designed for the project. We worked hand-in-hand with the client till the end of the project to show them the benefit of having a particular kind of street furniture that participates fully in the town’s identity and character.
