The Mediterranean Park

The Mediterranean Park, located in the heart of the Brusc harbor and overlooking the remarkable landscapes from the Embiez Islands to the Calanques, offers a true immersion in the world’s Mediterranean ecosystems. Through a succession of atmospheres—maquis, garrigue, pine forest, arid landscapes, and even inspirations from the South African fynbos—the park showcases the diversity of Mediterranean climates and their plant life.

The project is based on a strong duality of the site, organized into two complementary entities:

• To the east, a designed, sheltered, and shaded urban park, offering landscaped spaces and a variety of uses;

• To the west, a wilder coastal nature park, open to the sea and shaped by the elements.

This contrast structures the park’s identity, between control and spontaneity, shade and light, equipped spaces and natural environments.

The renovation focuses primarily on the urban area, enhancing the tree canopy, climate comfort, and landscape vistas. Inspired by Mediterranean terraced gardens, the design features progressive pathways punctuated by viewpoints and framed vistas of the wider landscape.

The project also incorporates wind as a structuring element, organizing the park into six successive landscape sequences. Each develops a specific atmosphere and uses (botanical gardens, recreational, sports, or contemplative spaces), while adapting to the site’s climatic constraints:

– The sequence of themed gardens relies on a plant selection adapted to the constraints of the Mediterranean climate: water scarcity, periodic fires, and the presence of salt due to sea spray, revealing the African fynbos and a lava garden echoing the site’s geological base.

– The Mediterranean garden: Mediterranean terraces guided by water.

– The performance garden, a space for relaxation and entertainment nestled between a pine forest and a meadow.

– The children’s playground, a dedicated area for children sheltered from the sun and wind.

– The sports garden, featuring a bowl overlooking the sea.

– The nature garden, designed with restraint, reveals the richness of its scrubland.

To the west, interventions are intentionally minimal in order to preserve the natural character of the coastline.
