Norra Stationsparken, the new district park of Hagastaden, is designed as a lush green lung within the dense urban fabric. Access to public park space in Hagastaden is limited, and the park is framed by tall buildings, resulting in high visitor pressure. A significant number of preschools are expected to use the park daily, placing particular demands on durability and inclusivity.
As Hagastaden as a whole has a deficit of park space, careful balancing between competing interests has been necessary. The park is designed for all age groups, with a strong focus on children’s environments. A sequence of distinct park rooms offers play opportunities for different age groups, all connected by a meandering park path. Substantial resources have been invested in extensive planting of large trees along the park’s edges, reducing the perceived scale and creating a sheltered inner park space.
The overarching ambition is to create a diverse, safe, and sustainable park environment at a human scale, with a favorable microclimate. The east–west axis of the park is shaped as elongated, gently terraced spaces framed by planting and rows of trees. An internal park path along the southern edge links these spaces through a soft, flowing design language. The north–south axis is organized as a series of terraced play and activity areas, providing varied environments tailored to different age groups.
The Detailed Development for Hagastaden connects Stockholm and Solna and is largely built above the former Norra Stationsområdet, previously used as a railway yard/area. The vision is for Hagastaden Dp1 to integrate seamlessly into the surrounding urban structure and contribute to a high-quality urban environment.
Parks and public squares are designed around different themes within the overarching concept of “Life Science.” This approach draws inspiration from life systems—both human and natural. Water, as a fundamental element in all life systems, plays a central role and is expressed within the park’s central plaza, and in the eastern part of the park as a splash pool and water play area.
