Situated atop a mixed-use tower on Shenyang, this rooftop renovation transforms a neglected mechanical platform into two distinctive sky gardens for adjacent penthouse show units. The original site was dominated by exposed ducts, shallow concrete beams, and limited structural capacity—seemingly inhospitable to greenery or design. Yet within these constraints, the project reimagines the rooftop as a prototype for elevated urban living.
The existing mechanical equipment was reorganized and discreetly concealed within a central service zone. A seamless metal mesh façade spans between columns, and the deck was uniformly raised by 450mm to allow for soil and planting, supported by structural reinforcement beneath.
The Black Garden evokes folded origami, using sharp geometries and dark tones to create an immersive, sculptural experience. A sunken lounge anchors the space, while an upper-level walkway and spa zone—including sauna and changing rooms—are enclosed within a faceted green volume, offering privacy and retreat.
The White Garden, by contrast, embraces openness and clarity. Through subtle spatial recomposition, existing columns and beams are integrated into a series of layered courtyards. White surfaces reflect shifting daylight, enhancing the garden’s quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Key features include a floating stair, dry landscape, and rooftop BBQ area—all arranged in a rhythmic, flowing sequence.
Planting design responds to structural constraints and climate with thoughtful composition, varied textures, and year-round interest. Trees are positioned to frame views and guide movement, while modular soil boxes address load and transport limitations.
This project demonstrates how design can elevate the overlooked. What was once a barren rooftop now serves as an immersive garden experience—redefining the potential of vertical urban environments and setting a precedent for future adaptive reuse in dense cities.
