Nana Coffee Roasters Bangna:
A Blurred Boundary Between Architecture, Interior, and Landscape.

Situated in a bustling commercial and residential district along Bangna-Trad Road, Nana Coffee Roasters Bangna introduces a seamless approach to café design that blends architecture, interior, and landscape into one seamless experience. This urban sanctuary redefines the coffee-drinking experience by redirecting attention from the busy surroundings of the motorway to the calming embrace of nature, blurring the boundaries between spaces and practices.

At the heart of this project lies the concept of a “blurred” space, an innovative fusion of architecture, interior design, and landscape elements. The design invites visitors to experience a space where the lines between indoors and outdoors dissolve, creating an immersive environment that prioritizes the guest’s experience over Instagram moments. Lush greenery, carefully preserved mature trees, and strategically designed landscaping elements merge together, enhancing the experience of indulging in high-quality coffee within nature’s embrace.

The café is composed of three small pavilions, designed to organically grow from the existing white gabled-roof house, now repurposed into a slow bar and service area. The new structures echo the rooflines of the original building while harmonizing with the surrounding greenery. The design emphasizes transparency, with glass walls allowing the outdoors to flow seamlessly into the interior. This integration extends to furniture that bridges the interior and garden terraces, further erasing distinctions between the two spaces.

Lush, protective layers of greenery surround the property, creating microenvironments that shield visitors from the noise, dust, pollution, and vibrations of the busy streets. The mature trees not only provide visual shelter but also help regulate the microclimate, reducing the surrounding temperature and offering a cool respite compared to the concrete masses and highways nearby. This space is more than a retreat for human visitors; it also serves as a haven for biodiversity, fostering habitats for birds, insects, and pollinators like bees and stingless bees.

The architectural layout is designed with open spaces between buildings, allowing the landscape to weave through the café’s structure. This open design ensures that patrons are constantly connected to nature, enhancing their experience. Each pavilion is divided by its own “garden balcony,” designed as a permeable softscape area. These balconies limit the number of people in each pavilion and reduce cross circulation, creating a more tranquil environment for guests. The balconies provide calm spots for solo reflection or casual outdoor meetings, while also maintaining serenity by separating the spaces to prevent congestion and preserve a peaceful atmosphere.

In addition to its function as a café, Nana Coffee Roasters Bangna incorporates thoughtful green design elements such as compact restroom units nestled within lush gardens, ensuring that even functional spaces are infused with nature. The restrooms are strategically placed between the parking area and the café, creating a natural flow and offering private gardens that provide peaceful views. A designated waiting area for delivery personnel is conveniently located before the main parking area, ensuring quick and easy delivery access while minimizing contact with café patrons. This layout, designed during the COVID-19 period, enhances safety by isolating delivery activities from customer areas, ensuring faster and safer service.

This thoughtful integration of architecture, interior design, and landscape not only creates an exceptional coffee experience but also contributes to the community by fostering a sustainable urban ecosystem. The café’s landscaping enhances the surrounding area, providing benefits far beyond its visitors. The space invites both humans and wildlife to coexist, contributing to the creation of a vibrant, thriving environment.
Nana Coffee Roasters Bangna stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, where architecture, interior, and landscape merge to create a sanctuary for both people and nature. It is more than just a café, it is a seamless, blurred experience that celebrates the beauty of coffee, the environment, and the connection between the two.
